About medical acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used to control pain and symptoms for hundreds of years, and we’re pleased to be able to offer this service at Olton Health and Performance with our acupuncturist Matt Thorp. Below are some common questions about acupuncture – please get in touch if you have a question not answered below.

Benefits of medical acupuncture include:

  • Pain relief for common conditions such as low back/neck pain, knee osteoarthritis, myofascial pain, and some post‑operative pain.
  • Headache/migraine management: reduces frequency and intensity of migraines and tension‑type headaches; at least as effective as some preventive drugs with fewer side effects.
  • Nausea and vomiting control, especially chemotherapy‑induced, post‑operative, and pregnancy‑related nausea.
  • Adjunct for cancer‑related symptoms, including pain, fatigue, dry mouth, and some neuropathies; improves quality of life in some patients.
  • Menopausal symptom relief, particularly hot flashes and night sweats.
  • Musculoskeletal and sports‑injury support, e.g., tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel–related pain, and sciatica.
  • Mental health and sleep: may reduce anxiety, stress, and depressive symptoms and improve insomnia in some people.
  • Allergy/respiratory symptom relief, including seasonal allergic rhinitis and some asthma symptom improvement (not lung function).
  • Opioid‑sparing effect after surgery and in chronic pain pathways by reducing analgesic requirements.

Please also read our Acupuncture aftercare advice here before attending a session, so that you know what steps to take to get maximum benefit from your time with us. Matt will also go through this at the time of your appointment.

How long is a first appointment?

Initial appointments are 1 hour — long enough to take a full case history, examine you, explain what we find and start treatment.

Will I need lots of sessions?
